The Department of Merchant Shipping recently notified owners and operators of small ferries and passenger boats operating in coastal waters of its intention to carry out an intensive programme of random inspections under the Coastal and Other Passenger Vessels Regulations of 2012, with particular emphasis on waste disposal and pollution prevention. A checklist of minimum equipment and other standards is attached to the notification.

Further, the notification draws attention to the obligation to discharge onboard sewage only at licensed facilities and requires vessel operators to submit details of their use of such facilities over the past six months.
