Bulgaria: Consumer Law

On July 8th, 2025, the Council of the EU adopted a decision pursuant to which Bulgaria was admitted as a member of the Eurozone as of January 1st, 2026.

The Bulgarian government has proposed significant amendments to consumer protection and competition law, introducing strict controls on retail price increases and new transparency requirements for dominant market players. Retailers and suppliers will face heightened scrutiny over pricing justifications, with substantial penalties for non-compliance and a shifted burden of proof in unfair commercial practice cases.

A popular practice among consumers under the age of 30 is to purposely search for better-value alternatives to items from well-known brands.
