Artificial intelligence ("AI") is now a routine part of business strategy, operational decision-making, and enterprise tooling. Alongside this, a growing vocabulary of technical terms and jargon has emerged that is frequently referenced in vendor discussions, internal assessments, governance frameworks, and regulatory conversations.

This bulletin provides a structured set of definitions designed to demystify commonly used AI jargon encountered in business contexts. Each term is explained in practical terms with examples that illustrate how these phenomena can arise in real organizational settings.

1. AI Workslop

AI Workslop (also called "workslop") refers to AI-generated content that appears polished and professional on the surface but lacks substantive accuracy, relevance, or internal coherence. The term combines "work" and "slop" (or low-quality output) to describe content that looks good but fails to deliver meaningful value. Although such content may initially seem usable, it often requires extensive human correction or replacement, resulting in increased workload rather than efficiency gains.

For example, an employee uses an AI system to draft a comprehensive project proposal for a client meeting. The document appears well-formatted with professional language, but when colleagues review it, they discover that the AI has included generic recommendations that don't align with the client's specific industry, fabricated market statistics, and contradictory conclusions. The team must spend several hours rewriting the proposal from scratch, essentially doubling the workload.

2. Catastrophic Forgetting

Catastrophic forgetting, also known as "catastrophic inference," describes a failure mode in neural networks in which previously learned capabilities degrade rapidly when the model is trained on new tasks or datasets. This occurs when a neural network model uses shared parameters across tasks, and optimizing those parameters for a new objective can unintentionally overwrite representations critical to earlier tasks. The result is not a gradual loss of performance but an abrupt and often severe decline in accuracy on prior functions, particularly in sequential or continual learning scenarios.

For example, an enterprise deploys an AI model to classify customer support tickets by issue type, achieving high accuracy. The same model is later retrained to prioritize tickets based on customer lifetime value. After retraining, the system begins misclassifying issue categories because the internal feature representations were modified to optimize prioritization rather than classification. The model has catastrophically forgotten how to perform its original task.

3. Confabulation

Confabulation occurs when an AI system generates outputs that are partially grounded in real information but contain inaccuracies due to misinterpretation, improper synthesis, or incorrect extrapolation. Unlike hallucination, confabulation does not involve entirely fabricated information. Instead, it blends authentic data with erroneous details, producing outputs that appear coherent and credible while being materially incorrect. This makes confabulation particularly difficult to detect and potentially more harmful in professional settings.

For example, a legal AI assistant is asked about a specific court case and cites a real Supreme Court decision with the correct case name and year. However, it incorrectly describes the ruling, attributing a dissenting opinion's argument as the majority holding, and misquotes the presiding justice. The case exists, but the AI has confabulated the details, mixing elements from different opinions and creating a plausible-sounding but inaccurate summary that could mislead an attorney preparing for trial.

4. Degeneration

Degeneration (or "degenerative AI") refers to the progressive decline in AI model quality that occurs when models are repeatedly trained on data generated by other AI systems rather than on original human-generated or primary source data. This recursive feedback loop causes the model to lose fidelity to real-world distributions over time. Outputs become increasingly uniform, biased, and error-prone, as subtle inaccuracies introduced in early generations are amplified in subsequent training cycles.

For example, an educational content company uses AI to generate practice questions, which are then published online. Other AI systems scrape this content and use it as training data for their own models. These second-generation AI systems produce slightly distorted versions of the questions, which are again published and used by third-generation models. After several iterations, the questions lose the diversity and nuance of the original human-created content.

5. Distortion

Distortion refers to inaccuracies or misrepresentations in AI-generated outputs that alter the substance, emphasis, or meaning of underlying information. Distortion may arise from selective omission, numerical miscalculation, biased framing, or incorrect attribution. While the source material may be real, the AI output deviates from factual or logical accuracy in ways that can mislead decision-makers.

For example, an AI system tasked with summarizing a quarterly earnings report highlights revenue growth while omitting disclosed risks related to supply chain disruptions. It also rounds projected margins upward by misinterpreting scenario-based forecasts as confirmed outcomes. The resulting summary presents a distorted financial picture that understates operational and market risk.

6. Hallucination

Hallucination is a failure mode in which an AI system generates content that lacks verifiable grounding, yet presents it with confidence and internal consistency. These outputs may include fabricated facts, entities, references, or events. Hallucinations are particularly problematic because they often appear plausible and authoritative, especially to non-expert users.

For example, a procurement team asks an AI assistant to identify international standards applicable to a specific type of industrial equipment. The AI responds with a detailed description of a standard that does not exist, including a standard number and issuing body. The formatting and terminology appear legitimate, but the entire standard is fabricated.

7. Memorization

Memorization in machine learning occurs when a model reproduces specific training examples rather than learning generalized patterns that support inference on new data. This behaviour can raise significant concerns related to confidentiality, intellectual property, and data protection when sensitive or proprietary information is involved.

For example, a large language model is trained on a dataset that includes thousands of medical records. Later, when a researcher provides a partial patient name and date from the training data, the model generates the complete medical record, including diagnoses, medications, and personal information that were in the training set. The model has memorized this specific training example rather than learning general medical knowledge patterns, potentially exposing private health information and demonstrating its failure to generalize.

8. Misperception

Misperception refers to errors that arise when an AI system incorrectly interprets real input data, leading to flawed conclusions or outputs. Unlike hallucination, misperception involves genuine inputs that are misunderstood due to contextual ambiguity, flawed weighting of features, or limitations in semantic interpretation. While "misperception" is not as formally established in AI literature as terms like hallucination, it appears in discussions of AI system failures and information quality.

For example, an AI-powered customer service chatbot receives the message: "I can't access my account." The AI misperceives this as a request to close the account rather than a technical support issue, because it incorrectly weighted the phrase "can't access" as indicating unwillingness rather than inability. The chatbot initiates account closure procedures, creating significant problems for the customer who simply needed password reset assistance. The AI misperceived the intent and context of the customer's query.

9. Pontification

Pontification describes the tendency of AI systems to present speculative or uncertain conclusions with excessive confidence, often without acknowledging assumptions, data limitations, or alternative outcomes. While not a formal technical term, "pontification" captures an important critique of how AI systems and their advocates sometimes make overconfident assertions that exceed their actual knowledge or capabilities.

For example, a business executive asks an AI system about the potential economic impact of a proposed regulatory change. Instead of acknowledging uncertainty or providing a range of scenarios, the AI responds with definitive statements like "This regulation will definitely reduce gross domestic product by 2.3% within six months," presenting the prediction as certain outcomes despite the inherent unpredictability of economic systems and the lack of data about this specific regulation. The AI is pontifying, making authoritative declarations beyond what the evidence supports.

10. Prompt Repetition

Prompt repetition is a prompting technique in which the same query is repeated within a single input to improve model performance on certain tasks, particularly classification or factual recall. The technique exploits attention mechanisms in causal language models by reinforcing relevant tokens and reducing sensitivity to token ordering effects.

For example, a researcher submits a multiple-choice question to an AI system: "Which element has the atomic number 79? A) Silver B) Gold C) Copper D) Platinum." Using standard prompting, the model may achieve 65% accuracy on similar questions. The researcher then employs prompt repetition, submitting the same question twice in sequence: "Which element has the atomic number 79? A) Silver B) Gold C) Copper D) Platinum. Which element has the atomic number 79? A) Silver B) Gold C) Copper D) Platinum." With this repetition technique, accuracy may improve to over 80% without increasing response length or latency.

11. Regurgitation

Regurgitation occurs when an AI system reproduces training content verbatim or near-verbatim, offering little or no transformation, synthesis, or analytical value. The system essentially "spits back" memorized content without transformation, understanding, or original contribution, functioning more as a sophisticated copy-paste mechanism than an intelligent reasoning system. While related to memorization, regurgitation specifically emphasizes the uncritical, mechanical reproduction of training content.

For example, a student asks an AI writing assistant to help analyze Shakespeare's Hamlet. Instead of providing original analysis or synthesis, the AI outputs paragraphs that are nearly identical to passages from popular literary criticism websites that were in its training data, including specific phrases, examples, and even the same sequence of arguments. The AI has regurgitated existing commentary rather than generating new insights or demonstrating understanding of the text.
