Brien Lorenze Nominated Commissioner Of Consumer Product Safety Commission

On June 1, 2026, the White House issued a statement that Brien Lorenze of Virginia is nominated as a commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for a term of seven years, from October 27, 2024, filling the seat vacated by Commissioner Doug Dziak.

Lorenze previously joined the CPSC in March 2026 as Executive Director, for which he was responsible for managing the agency’s regulatory portfolio and supervising efforts to identify and reduce hazards. During his tenure as Executive Director, Lorenze, along with Acting Chairman Peter Feldman, announced a CPSC initiative to use modernized injury surveillance and data modeling, including using AI to review sources such as social media and online reviews, to anticipate rather than react to hazards. Before joining the CPSC, Lorenze served as a senior advisor in the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Lorenze also served as Chief Data Officer for the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee. Prior to his roles in public service, Lorenze worked as a principal at Deloitte and held leadership positions at BearingPoint and IBM Global Services.

This is the first formal nomination of a CPSC commissioner candidate since President Trump nominated Karen Sessions to replace former Commissioner Mary T. Boyle on February 11, 2026. The administration’s nomination of Lorenze comes as four of the five commission seats have remained unfilled for many months following the July 2025 termination of three Democratic CPSC Commissioners — Boyle, Alexander Hoehn-Saric, and Richard Trumka, Jr. — and the August 2025 departure of Commissioner Douglas Dziak following the conclusion of his term, including a one-year permissible holdover. The Trump administration also nominated William “Billy” Hewes to replace Commissioner Dziak in October 2025; however, Hewes’ nomination was withdrawn on March 12, 2026. No action has been taken by the U.S. Senate to confirm Sessions since her nomination in February, and it remains unclear how quickly the Senate may move now that the number of pending nominees has doubled. For now, Feldman continues to operate the CPSC as its sole commissioner, with his current term set to expire on October 26, 2026.
